|
Microsoft has played down reports that it's currently in talks with Sony regarding the incorporation of Blu-ray technology into its Xbox 360, implying it's future focus will be trained on downloadable content.
Following the demise of Toshiba's HD DVD format last month, speculation mounted that Microsoft could be forced to work with Sony, appropriating Blu-ray technology for its console. However, speaking to Reuters, Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg confirmed, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."
Greenberg asserted that, "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," suggesting Microsoft plans to place further emphasis on its Xbox 360 Live Marketplace service which already has support from several major film studios, including Paramount and Warner Bros.

| Go! Messenger now available for download in Europe |
|
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has something good in store for Sony PlayStation Portable fans, as the recently finalized Go! Messenger service is now available. To download, just hit its icon under the Network menu.
Akin to the Skype service on PSP, Go! Messenger is SCEE's alternative service which offers free video, voice and instant messaging communication features. Through 2,500 BT Openzone hotspots, European PSP units can now connect and be used to communicate with ease.
It appears that the service will remain exclusive to the European region, so you can hook up and chat with friends if you're in that part of the world. Using the Go! Cam video camera, it is possible to make video calls. Voice chat requires a headset, while an intuitive on-screen keyboard makes sending instant messages an easy task.

| Wii TV Friend Channel launches in Japan |
|
Nintendo has released an interactive community TV Guide for the Wii in Japan today, dubbed the Wii TV Friend Channel.
This latest edition to the channel service brings a Freeview style menu system direct to your console. This displays a comprehensive list of TV shows you can watch by switching your Wii off and flicking the TV to another channel. Own goal, Nintendo?
You can also highlight interesting programs and use your Wii Remote as a TV remote, so you don't have to work out those arm muscles by putting one remote down and picking another up.
Of actual use is the interactive community features. If you've gone to the effort of matching up Friends Codes, you can see what your friends have highlighted and also check out their star rating for the shows.

| Blu-ray Xbox 360 Planned By Microsoft |
|
Rumours were circulating today that Microsoft is set to dump HD DVD and bring out a Blu ray Xbox 360 by as early as May 2008. The move will allow the Company to go head to head with the Sony PS3 gaming console which has been credited with being one of the main reasons that retailers have preferred Blu-ray over Toshiba’s HD DVD.
Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months.
The Company has also been working on a built in Blu-ray player however insiders are claiming that Microsoft see the HD format battle moving online with consumers offered 1080p movie and content files as a download as opposed to having to buy a HD DVD or Blu-ray disc. Both Intel and Microsoft have been supporters of the HD DVD format that is set to be killed off this week. The Company has also held discussions with several OEM manufacturers of media centres with nearly all of them telling the software Company that they are set to move to Blu-ray configured Media Centres within the next month. Late last week US Media Centre maker Niveus dumped HD DVD in favour of Blu-ray. The Company VP of marketing Brian Paper said that Niveus had received support from Microsoft and Intel when implementing HD DVD. The format wasn't pushed on Niveus, he said, adding that the commitment in both Intel and Microsoft "isn't religious for HD DVD". Michael Ephraim the Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment said: "We would welcome Microsoft to the Blu-ray stable. In fact it is quite logical for them as the PS3 has been very succesful in driving consumers to Blu-ray. In fact we believe that it has done more to win the format war than traditional Blu-ray player". When asked whether Sony would grant Microsoft a Blu-ray licence he said: "That is up to Sony Corporate but I see no reason why they would not do it". During CES 2006 the then Microsoft's Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing Peter Moore told Japanese site ITmedia that a Blu-ray Xbox 360 peripheral could appear for the system if the need arises. Moore admitted that Microsoft isn't sure of the next-generation format war's outcome, with the worst-case scenario being a repeat of the Beta vs. VHS war of the '80s. However, he suggested that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since its uses an external drive. Source: Smarthouse

| PSN racks up 8 million downloads |
|
According to Sony, PlayStation Network downloads are about to smash through the eight million mark. It's also being reported that in North America there almost three million registered PlayStation Network accounts.
Jack Tretton, chief of Sony US, said, "Coming off a great holiday sales season we see strong momentum behind PS3 in 2008, and feel confident about the year ahead... we have Blu-ray emerging as the de facto high def standard, the developer community is hitting their stride, consumers are recognising the tremendous value and innovative services such as PlayStation Home are all in the works, so this is definitely shaping up to be a breakthrough year for us." Tretton also revealed there have been more than 52 million downloads of stuff from the Store since it began.
So nearly three million gamers in the US all demanding in-game XMB? Can't be far off now...

| This week on Arcade: Poker Smash plus a Crystal Quest update |
|
Poker Smash will be available this Wednesday for 800 points.
Additionally, Crystal Quest will receive a free gameplay update this week.
According to the press alert, here are the update details:
Developer Stainless Games has added a fresh twist to the puzzle action by incorporating a score multiplier. This update will make the game slicker and faster than before and opens up the possibility of even higher scores!
The score multiplier increases every time gamers pick up a crystal, but failing to pick up a crystal or getting zapped negates the multiplier. To keep a level playing field, old Leaderboards will be retired after the update, but will still be viewable for posterity’s sake. The update also includes improvements to downloadable content, which is part of Stainless Games’ ongoing commitment to constantly improve the player experience.

| EA still experiencing delay with PS3 software |
|
CEO of Electronic Arts John Riccitiello has admitted that the company is still experiencing issues with PlayStation 3 software development, although not with titles where the PS3 is the lead format.
Speaking in an investors conference call following the announcement of the company's financial earnings, Riccitiello said the group still had engineering work to do on the format.
"Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all," he said.
"But in circumstances where we either led on the Xbox 360 or ran parallel production, for the most part, we're still experiencing some delay on the PS3. It's a little bit more of a challenging development environment for us."
Admitting that the problem has improved over the past months, he added, "there still remains some catching up to do on the engineering side for the PS3." Source: GamesIndustry
